9th-12th Grade: Climate Action Challenge

This FREE program includes a 60-minute in-class lesson and a 90-minute field trip to Sonoma Clean Power's Customer Center in downtown Santa Rosa. Transportation is provided.


Classroom Lesson Summary:

In this hands-on, one-hour presentation, Sonoma Water educators introduce students to the topic of our electrical energy system and how it's connected to our climate. 

Essential Questions:

How can turning on a light impact the climate?

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will identify the energy sources used to generate electricity in California. 
  • Students will explore the environmental impacts of using fossil fuels for electricity production. 
  • Students will compare the efficiency of an incandescent light bulb and an LED light bulb.

Field Trip Lesson Summary:

In this hands-on, 75-minute field trip to Sonoma Clean Power's Customer Center in downtown Santa Rosa, students will participate in a climate action challenge and work in teams to solve a series of puzzles to unlock critical solutions to reducing emissions in Sonoma County. The Sonoma Clean Power Customer Center can accommodate up to 35 students; multiple fieldtrips can be arranged for larger groups.

What are actions we can take as individuals and as a community to reduce our climate impact?

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will explore sectors of our economy which emit greenhouse gases. 
  • Students will identify actions to minimize emissions and improve sustainability.
